 From Curiosity to Expertise: Five Years of Growth on My Video Editing Journey

My passion lies in video editing and photography. The initial opportunity to get into these fields was really simple and stemmed from my desire to document every beautiful moment. Now, I've been an editor for close to 5 years.

I was 17 years old at the time and when I first started, I stepped into the editing field purely out of curiosity and a desire to make a career in self-publishing. I was coming up with the idea of making videos that didn't show my face and expressing the content through sound and images. In order to realise this idea, I started learning to use Adobe Premiere Pro, a video editing software, and slowly fumbled my way through it, gradually mastering the basic skills of editing.

As I gained a deeper understanding of editing, I began to realise the importance of music in video. As a result, I gradually incorporated music into my work, and the videos became more attractive and infectious as a result. There are no words to describe the sense of achievement and satisfaction I feel whenever I succeed in producing a satisfying video.

On 17th November 2020, I released my first video in my life and created my own brand - Study Studio, a channel for sharing study and life related content. As my content grew and my editing skills improved, I began to explore special effects production, which is when I was introduced to Adobe After Effects, a software that allowed me to achieve more creative and visual effects.

As Effects production became more sophisticated, I changed the name of my channel to Revery Music, moving towards content that focused more on music and visual experiences, and started an Instagram account to promote it. At this stage of my life, I was immersed in the joy of creating, constantly experimenting with new styles and techniques and having fun.

I still vividly remember the day I posted the most viewed video of my life on 12 January 2021, with 877,000 views. During that time, I was in a state of euphoria almost every day, and the excitement and satisfaction was indescribable. Although it was my first and last video to blow up, it made me realise the importance of persistence and innovation.

As time went on, I continued to produce videos, but the results weren't as good. Maybe it was the changing tastes of the audience, or maybe my content wasn't new enough, I gradually slowed down the channel's operation. It wasn't until I entered university that I decided to take an experiential mindset and took a job travelling to homeowners to film their Airbnb and create promotional videos to upload to social media. I spent a lot of this time researching and producing, and although I learnt a lot of new things, I neglected my studies as a result and eventually had to give up the job.

Next, I started to take on some editing slots and gained a lot of experience. Recently, I took another job to produce a promotional video for a big company. This job gave me a lot of opportunities to grow, I learnt how to work in a more professional environment and how to deal with clients' needs and feedback. But despite this, I always felt that I was not good enough. In order to focus on improving my editing skills, I decided to quit my job and dedicate more time and effort to study and look forward to creating even better work in the future.
